Anne says: During the Global Warming debate, Kathy brought up a topic that I have since looked further into and found to be fascinating. It is summarized best here:
Briefly, we did not evolve the impulse to think long-term, which is why we engage in activities that we KNOW will harm us down the line (overeating, lack of exercise, drug/alcohol abuse...etc.). Our lizard brains simply are not programmed to give a damn about long term repercussions.
So ... how do we silence this part of our brain and allow more recently evolved areas, which can think long-term, to govern our behavior?
Join us on Friday, May 21, as we try to figure it out!
Re: the article...it speaks well to what we can do individually to counter our short term thinking tendencies, but I think the real question is how do we apply the more recently evolved discipline and mindfulness as a society? This involves incentives and not-necessarily-cooperative game dynamics, as well as balancing our higher level objectives against our more deeply ensconced social needs (saving for retirement is all good, but all my friends have iphones and I *need* one :)
